About São Roque do Pico

São Roque do Pico is a municipality on the island of Pico, in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. The population in 2011 was 5,553, in an area of 102.03 km². It is the third-largest municipality in terms of population, and fourth largest in terms of area, on the island of Pico. The town of São Roque do Pico, which is the municipal seat, is located in the northern part of the island, along the eastern coast. It is the largest settlement in the municipality, with a population of 3,649 inhabitants in 2011.[3] The municipality also includes the settlements of Abade, Arrozal, Cachorro, Caiado, Cedros, Chaínho, Couto, Ginetes, Gorgulhão, Lomba do Rosário, Madalena do Pico, Paul, Santo António, Santo Amaro, São Benedito, São Carlos, São Mateus, São Miguel, São Pedro, São Roque, São Vicente and Vila do Porto. The island of Pico is of volcanic origin, and São Roque do Pico is no exception. The municipality is home to the highest mountain in Portugal, Pico Mountain, which rises to 2,351 m above sea level. The mountain is a popular tourist destination, and many visitors come to the municipality to hike or climb to the summit. The municipality is also home to the Lajes do Pico Airport, which offers regular flights to the island of São Miguel.
